C.E.R.T.O. / Acquisition example

What a forensic web page acquisition produces: a real example, file by file.

On 12 October 2026 we acquired this site's home page with C.E.R.T.O. Here is everything that came out of it: the session video, the screenshots, the email the user received, the online reports and, one by one, the 167 files of the BagIt bundle, with what they contain and what they are for. The bundle can be downloaded: you can verify it yourself.

01 · The acquisition

How it went, minute by minute.

First you declare what you acquire, then you browse; the program does the rest, afterwards.

The video C.E.R.T.O. records during the acquisition: 46 seconds, from 18:00:03 to 18:00:49. What you see here is a reduced, silent MP4 copy made for the site. The evidence is the original, evidence/video/recording_2026-10-12T16-00-03-121Z.webm (15.08 MB, VP9, 1918×1064), with SHA-256 0b5c8b4a36b2b04a07c000a5ce612c098ad0da219edfc6af662e84fbf1885571.

The times below come from the logs/acquisition-log.txt log, in Italian time (CEST). Before starting, the computer clock was compared with three NTP servers (time.google.com, pool.ntp.org, time.cloudflare.com), all of which responded: a consensus offset of 10 ms; the software reports a maximum deviation from the consensus of 22 ms.

  1. The operator declares the acquisition target and scope: "domain and subdomains" of certo.acquisizioniforensi.com. The declaration goes into the bundle as is.

  2. The acquisition starts. The page had been open for 21 seconds: C.E.R.T.O. reloads it bypassing the cache, which helps record the network resources; the completeness check later identifies any that are missing.

  3. Video, passive traffic capture and the WACZ archive start together. First automatic screenshot.

  4. HTML copy and screenshot of the visible area, taken "live": they are the reference for the page state at the time of the visit.

  5. The operator scrolls the page and takes six more screenshots with the program's button. The program records mouse movements, scrolling and page changes: 57 events over the whole session.

  6. Live full page, on the page as the operator sees it: 11 sections, a 10,364-pixel-tall document.

  7. The operator presses "Stop". End of browsing, after 50.96 seconds.

  8. Network checks: domain WHOIS, DNS records, traceroute, TLS certificates. Then the completeness check: 9 resources used by the page but missing from the initial collection are requested again, and marked as derived evidence.

  9. Second full page, "after the fact": C.E.R.T.O. goes back to the address and captures it again. It starts about 65.5 seconds after the acquisition began, finishes at 18:01:16, and the delay is written into the bundle.

  10. Report generated; Sectigo timestamp on the report (SHA-512).

  11. Log closed (84 s from the start), then the BagIt bundle: manifest signed with Ed25519 and stamped by Sectigo, hash manifests, and last, at 18:01:31, the qualified InfoCert seal: about 92 seconds from the start.

  12. The server receives the ZIP (37.35 MB, 39,166,336 bytes, in 8 seconds), registers it with short code W2zAEe and sends the email.

Right after "Stop": the program runs traceroute, WHOIS, DNS, the WACZ archive and the report in parallel. The window can be hidden: the work goes on.
A few seconds later: traceroute at 30%, saving of the HTTP traffic (HAR) under way.
Acquisition completed: ID, session duration, archive size. The upload to the server is at 100%.
Upload completed: the server assigned code 6acd045d10b3e19dc213 and short code W2zAEe. A copy of the ZIP stays on the operator's computer.
02 · BagIt

The structure of the bundle.

A public standard (RFC 8493) anyone can read, even without our program.

BagIt is the format libraries and archives use to transfer digital collections without losing their integrity. The idea is simple: everything collected sits in the data/ folder (the "payload"); the root holds a few text files stating which files are there and with which hash. If a single byte changes, the hash no longer matches.

Bundle information: bag-info.txt

It is the first file to open. Here it is in full, exactly as it sits in the bundle (a verbatim quote: the text is the program's):

Bagging-Date: 2026-10-12
Bag-Software-Agent: C.E.R.T.O. 3.3.3
Acquisition-Type: web
Conformance: BagIt RFC 8493 v1.0; RFC 3161; CASE 1.4.0/UCO 1.4.0 (metadata/evidence.case.jsonld)
Methodology-References: ISO/IEC 27037:2012; SWGDE 21-F-001-1.1 Best Practices for Acquiring Online Content (2024-03-15)
Methodology-Note: methodology references, not a certification of conformance: operator competence, tool validation, organisational procedures, access control and subsequent custody cannot be demonstrated by the package alone.
Time-Anchoring: NTP + RFC 3161 anchor the capture window; remote content timestamps are not independently anchored.

External-Seal-TSA: InfoCert S.p.A. — qualified electronic time-stamp (eIDAS, Regulation (EU) No 910/2014, art. 42) on tagmanifest-sha256.txt

Line by line: date and program that packaged the bundle; the acquisition type; the standards the format complies with; the methodology guidelines followed, with the remark — written by the program itself — that citing them is not a certification of conformance; what, according to the program, NTP and the timestamps anchor (the capture window, not dates written by the site: see the limits below for how to read this sentence); the acquired address and the IP that answered; the WACZ archive as the main evidence, with three hashes; the external InfoCert seal.

manifest-sha256.txt has 157 lines, one per file in data/: SHA-256 hash and path. tagmanifest-sha256.txt does the same for 8 control files, including manifest-sha256.txt. That way the InfoCert timestamp on that single file covers the 8 files it lists and, through manifest-sha256.txt, the 157 in data/. The tag manifest does not list itself or its own timestamp: that is how BagIt is designed (RFC 8493, §2.2.1).

metadata/evidence.case.jsonld describes the acquisition in CASE/UCO, the language used by forensic analysis tools: seven nodes — the WACZ file, the URL, the IPv4 address, the tool, the person who acquired, the investigative action and the provenance record. It is intended for exchange with tools that support the schema and versions used (CASE 1.4.0, UCO 1.4.0).

03 · data/

The content, folder by folder.

What is in each folder, what it shows and where to look.

evidence/ — the main evidence

  • ReplayWebPage.wacz (1.69 MB) — the session's web archive. Inside is a WARC file (ISO 28500) with the capture's records, including the resources recovered afterwards and the declared local snapshot (index.certo-snapshot-20261012160116.html): traffic observed during the session must be told apart from derived resources. A compatible reader such as replayweb.page can replay the archived material, subject to capture and replay limitations. Next to it, disclaimer_wacz.txt explains what to expect: an ordinary site usually replays; a web application like X or Instagram may not.
  • video/ — the WebM video of the browser window (the one above) and video-log.json, with the recording start, save and stop times.
  • interactions/user-interactions.json — 57 recorded events: 53 relating to mouse movements, scrolling (with the position) and DOM mutations, plus four tracking activation events. They are not all manual operator actions: some scrolling happens during the automatic full-page capture.
  • javascript-state/ — three snapshots of the page's global variables (203 each) and of sessionStorage.
  • tracing/performance-metrics.json — 14 snapshots of browser metrics during the session; source-artifacts/favicon.ico — the site icon.

pages/ — the visited page

One subfolder for each logical page visited; here just one, 001_certo.acquisizioniforensi.com_721abda8/. Inside:

  • screenshot-viewport.jpeg and page.html (60,127 bytes) — the visible area and the HTML taken live at 18:00:06: they are the reference for the page state at the time of the visit.
  • screenshots/ — the session's 7 screenshots, one automatic and six taken by the operator, with the time to the millisecond in the name.
  • screenshots-fullpage-live/ and screenshots-fullpage/ — the full page twice, in 11 sections each: the first live at the end of browsing, the second captured again afterwards. The reason is stated in page-metadata.json: both are kept so they can be compared, and the second carries its delay (fullpageDriftMs: 65,497 ms, measured from the start of the acquisition to the start of the recapture).
  • html-snapshots/ — 12 dated HTML copies, each with its metadata file: they document the DOM state at their save times; they are not a continuous record of every change.
Screenshot watermark
The watermark printed on each screenshot, enlarged: program version, date and time with the time zone (2026-10-12T18:00:03.585+02:00, Europe/Rome), acquisition ID and URL. At the bottom of the screenshot the watermark is repeated, above a green band saying whether the page was within the declared scope ("IN SCOPE").
The first screenshot (screen_1, 18:00:03): the same one the server publishes at /scr/W2zAEe, byte-for-byte identical (SHA-256 5e22212f…0958498ea).
The 11 sections of the full page captured afterwards (screenshots-fullpage), side by side. Each section has its own watermark.

network/ — the network

  • network.har (104.10 KB) — the HTTP traffic in HAR format: 17 requests, all answered with 2xx, with headers, timings and the IP of the server that answered (89.116.109.91). Other JSON files — requests.json, responses.json, resources.json, statistics.json and the maps url-mapping.json and resources-mapping.json — provide views and summaries of the network collection: their counts do not necessarily match the HAR entries (statistics.json, for example, reports 18 requests and 19 responses).
  • http-headers.txt — the main page's headers. Here they reveal a content delivery network (CDN): server: hcdn, x-hcdn-cache-status: DYNAMIC. The report draws the right conclusion: the contacted IP is a CDN node, not the origin server, which cannot be seen from there.
  • dns-lookup.txt, whois.txt, traceroute.txt — the name's DNS records (two IPv4, two IPv6), the domain registration data (registered on 7 July 2017, registrar Hostinger) and a traceroute: 19 hop positions, three without a response, towards 89.116.109.153, the address resolved at the time of the check, which differs from 89.116.109.91, contacted by the browser during the visit. The DNS does not contain the contacted IP either: the report flags it and explains why (rotating addresses, measurements taken at different moments).
  • cookies.json, cookies-detailed.json, cookies.txt — the 4 cookies set by the site. The forensic browser starts with no cookies, cache or extensions: the ones you find were set by the site during the acquisition.
  • completeness-report.json — the check lists 19 detected HTTP(S) resources: 10 already collected and 9 recovered through subsequent requests, declared derived evidence because they were obtained after the capture and may differ; one inline resource is counted separately. The 100% figure refers to this list, including the derived recoveries, not to the entire website or every possible dynamic resource.

tls/ — the site certificate

ssl.txt and ssl-data.json summarise the certificate the server presented (just one, for the whole session). certificates/ holds the full chain — site certificate, intermediates, root — as .crt and .pem. The certificates document the covered domain name, issuing authority, validity period and certificate chain. This is a domain-validated (DV) certificate issued by Let's Encrypt: it attests control of the domain; it does not identify the site's legal owner or guarantee its content. To read one: openssl x509 -in <certificate.crt> -text -noout, which shows the certificate but does not by itself validate the chain.

resources/ — the page resources

site-structure/ holds the files that make up the page, saved with the site structure: the HTML (index.html, the DOM copy dom-snapshot.html, the it/ version), the stylesheet, fonts, scripts, logo and icons, plus an image embedded in the HTML (data-urls/). The files have accompanying .meta.json records (source address, type, date, size…): the available fields vary according to the collection method. File hashes are in the bundle's inventories.

reports/, hashes/, logs/, metadata/

  • reports/report.pdf (24 pages) and report.txt — the acquisition report: data, timings, NTP, network and CDN, four hashes (MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-512) for the main artifacts, operator, declared scope, certificates, tool attestation with the program's hash, explicit statements on the method. report.tsq and report.tsr are the request and response of the Sectigo timestamp on report.txt.
  • The text lists: links.txt (links on the page), screenshots.txt (29 screenshots: 7 from the session and 22 of the full page), downloads.txt, objects.txt, interactions.txt, cookies.txt, system-info.txt and system-processes.txt (the computer the program ran on).
  • hashes/file-hashes.json — the general inventory, with SHA-256 and size of 147 files (40.17 MB, 42,120,525 bytes). Its SHA-256 hash is written inside report.txt before the timestamp, so the timestamp on the report also covers the inventory. Left out, and the report lists them with the reason: the report itself and its timestamp, the inventory (it cannot contain its own hash), the dashboard and a technical file of the upload.
  • logs/acquisition-log.txt — 246 events, no errors or warnings; acquisition-log.at-report.txt is its copy at report time. metadata/ — operator, declared scope (scope-summary.json), acquisition data.
First page of reports/report.pdf: URL, code, operator, declared scope and the first screenshot with its hashes.
Capture completeness in the dashboard: 19 HTTP(S) resources detected, 10 collected at once, 9 recovered afterwards (derived evidence), 0 unrecoverable.
04 · interactive.html

Browse the bundle in your browser.

An HTML file opened alongside the bundle folders, in 21 sections. It is a view of the data: the evidence remains the files.

Whoever receives the bundle — a judge or a party-appointed expert — need not open 167 files one by one. data/interactive.html presents them in sections: summary, visited pages, screenshots, video, chain of custody, completeness, hash inventory, acquisition flow, network, certificates, cookies, interactions, log, file map, standards and integrity check. The dashboard is a derived view, not primary evidence. It is excluded from the file-hashes.json inventory anchored by the report timestamp, but included in the BagIt manifest and therefore indirectly covered by the InfoCert seal: modifying it would make the BagIt integrity check fail, without touching the other files. It is viewed locally; the public register lookup, however, uses the Internet and sends the evidence hash, while recomputing hashes does not upload the files to the server.

Summary: pages visited, scope, duration, certificates, verified timestamp; then operator and timings. Bottom right, the public register lookup (needs the network): registered, code W2zAEe.
Acquisition flow: the connection map (a single IP, a Hostinger CDN node) and the timeline of phases, operator actions and network requests.
Network: 17 HTTP requests, 512.9 KB, all answered with 2xx, and each request's timeline.
Chain of custody: the Sectigo timestamp on the report, verified, with the full OpenSSL output and the commands to repeat the check by hand.
Hash inventory: 147 files, 40.17 MB, SHA-256 and size of each, with a name filter.
Standards: each step of the method with the files it produced and the reference standards (ISO/IEC 27037, WARC ISO 28500, HAR, RFC 1035, RFC 3912, X.509, FIPS 180-4, RFC 3161).
Annotated file map: the bundle structure with a line of explanation for each entry.
Integrity check in the browser: you choose the folder and the dashboard recomputes the SHA-256 of the 147 files locally, without uploading them to the server. For the full check it points to verify.sh and verify.bat.
05 · Seals

One signature and three timestamps.

In a precise order: each one closes what came before.

  1. Timestamp on the report — Sectigo, 18:01:22, SHA-512 of reports/report.txt. The report already contains the hash of the file-hashes.json inventory: the timestamp covers both.
  2. Ed25519 signature — on the data/manifest.json manifest: UUID, operator, device fingerprint, NTP, URL, IP, capture window. It allows the manifest to be verified against the public key included in the manifest itself (the private key is not in the bundle). By itself it does not attest the operator's legal identity, and it is not a qualified or advanced electronic signature in the legal sense. In our check, verify.sh verified it successfully.
  3. Inner anchor — Sectigo, 18:01:25, SHA-256 of the signed manifest, in data/tsa.tsr.
  4. BagIt manifests — manifest-sha256.txt (the 157 files in data/, including manifest and anchor) and tagmanifest-sha256.txt (the control files).
  5. External seal — InfoCert, 18:01:31, SHA-256 of tagmanifest-sha256.txt, in tagmanifest-sha256.txt.tsr. It is a qualified timestamp under the eIDAS Regulation (art. 42): by law it enjoys the presumption of the accuracy of the date and time and of the integrity of the data it refers to (art. 41(2)). The qualified status of the service can be checked on the EU Trusted List; this timestamp's token names the authority ICEDTSPD1202608 and the policy 1.3.76.36.1.1.40. And it is the last operation: after it, the bundle is not touched again.

06 · After the acquisition

What the user receives.

A copy on their own computer, one on the server, an email and five addresses to pass on to whoever must check.

The email received at 18:01:42 CEST: the first screenshot, acquisition code, server IP, time, operator, the ZIP and WACZ hashes, size, program version and the two buttons with the addresses also written in full. Attached, the text report.

On the computer the bundle ZIP stays in the acquisitions folder. On the server the same ZIP, byte-for-byte identical: we downloaded it from /zip/W2zAEe and it has the same SHA-256 hash as the operator's, a361f4f7…dff91498.

The email comes from sistema@acquisizioniforensi.it a few seconds after the upload. The ZIP hashes it lists are the first check for anyone who receives the bundle: if the ZIP in their hands has a different hash, it is not that one.

In the client area the acquisition appears in the web pages register, with the "InfoCert seal" label, the short code and buttons for ZIP archive, preview, timestamp, HTML certificate, PDF report and TXT report.

The online reports open without an account: whoever has the short code can read them. The /crt HTML report and the /doc PDF describe the acquisition and list the hashes of headers, screenshot, WACZ archive and ZIP; the PDF also carries a QR code linking to the online report. Anyone can also look up an acquisition by its hash, on the Find an acquisition page.

The client area: the web pages register with the acquisition, the "InfoCert seal" label and the six actions.
The public HTML report, /crt/W2zAEe: procedure, InfoCert seal, watermarked screenshot and, below, the hash tables.
The PDF report, /doc/W2zAEe: first of three pages, with a QR code linking to the online report.

08 · Verification

Verify it yourself.

It is the same check the opposing party can run, without asking us anything.

  1. Download the bundle from /zip/W2zAEe and check its hash: shasum -a 256 on macOS, sha256sum on Linux, certutil -hashfile … SHA256 on Windows. The result must be a361f4f7da9aa6a858b40c7e78c2b25d4f3692c127d35083e85840e5dff91498, the same hash as in the email and the report.
  2. Extract the ZIP. On Windows use 7-Zip: the built-in extractor fails on long paths, and this bundle has some (the README.txt says so too).
  3. From the bundle folder run sh verify.sh on macOS or verify.bat on Windows. With sh in front: the script in the ZIP is not marked executable.
  4. Read the individual check results, not just the last line: SKIP means "not performed". The final BUNDLE VALID message also appears when the signature or timestamps were skipped for lack of tools: a verification is complete only if those checks are reported as OK.

This is the result we got on macOS, with the verification kit already present, on the copy downloaded from the server. The output is abbreviated and annotated: the 165 per-file "OK" lines are summarised in two comment lines.

What you need

  • File hashes: nothing to install, they are recomputed with what is already on the computer.
  • Timestamps: OpenSSL 3. On macOS the system ships LibreSSL, which the script does not use; Windows has no OpenSSL. You can put openssl.exe, with its libraries, in a tools folder next to the script.
  • Ed25519 signature: besides OpenSSL it needs the certo-bagit tool with the signature verification script. OpenSSL alone does not check it.
  • The verification kit: if the tools are missing, verify.sh on macOS and verify.bat on Windows try to download a kit from acquisizioniforensi.it and check its hash, which is written in the script. We have not tested Linux: with OpenSSL 3 on the system the script checks the timestamps, but the automatic kit is designed for macOS.
  • The network: CERTO_NO_NETWORK=1 disables both the kit download and the online register query. On macOS: CERTO_NO_NETWORK=1 sh verify.sh; in the Windows command prompt: set CERTO_NO_NETWORK=1, then verify.bat.

The three timestamps, by hand

verify.sh checks the inner anchor and the external seal; it does not check the timestamp on the report. All three are verified with OpenSSL 3 and the bundle's tsa-ca.pem file. On macOS use the full path of OpenSSL 3 (for example /opt/homebrew/opt/openssl@3/bin/openssl), because the system openssl command is LibreSSL:

openssl ts -verify -data data/reports/report.txt -in data/reports/report.tsr -CAfile tsa-ca.pem
openssl ts -verify -data data/manifest.json -in data/tsa.tsr -CAfile tsa-ca.pem
openssl ts -verify -data tagmanifest-sha256.txt -in tagmanifest-sha256.txt.tsr -CAfile tsa-ca.pem

We ran all three commands: each one answers Verification: OK. This confirms the pairing between data and timestamps with the certificates supplied in the bundle; the qualified status of the InfoCert service is checked separately, on the EU Trusted List.

09 · Limits

What it proves, and what it does not.

The bundle states its own limits. Here they are, with where it writes them.

Capture date, not content dates

The NTP comparison documents the computer clock offset. Capture times are recorded by the software; the timestamps, applied after browsing, show that those files already existed at that time. Dates written on the page remain the site's own statements (Time-Anchoring in bag-info.txt).

The second full page is later

The recapture starts about 65.5 seconds after the start and finishes at 18:01:16. For the state at the time of the visit, the live visible-area screenshot and HTML count (statement no. 2 of the report).

Recovered resources are derived

The 9 resources requested again after the capture may differ from those of the visit: they are marked as derived evidence (completeness-report.json).

The origin server is not visible

With a CDN in between, the contacted IP is the delivery node's. The report says so in the server and CDN section.

Method cited, not certified

ISO/IEC 27037 and SWGDE are methodology references. Operator competence and subsequent custody cannot be shown by the bundle alone (Methodology-Note).

What it said, not whether it was true

The bundle documents what the software collected, and verification allows checking that the files covered by the seal have not changed. It does not establish that the content was true, or that the website remained unchanged afterwards.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

What does a web page acquisition bundle contain?
In this example 167 files: 157 in the data/ folder (the "payload") and 10 outside it, nine at the root and one in metadata/. The ones outside the payload are the control files: BagIt declaration, hash manifests, InfoCert seal, verification scripts, CASE/UCO description. data/ holds the WACZ archive, session video, watermarked screenshots, HTML copies, HTTP traffic (HAR), DNS, WHOIS, traceroute, TLS certificates, page resources, log, hashes and PDF and text reports.
How long does a web page acquisition take?
Here the operator's browsing lasted 51 seconds. About 92 seconds passed from the start to the final qualified timestamp: the log closes at 84 seconds, before the bundle is packaged and the last two timestamps are applied. The email arrived at 18:01:42 CEST, about 103 seconds after the start. A longer page, or more visited pages, take longer.
Can I verify the bundle without C.E.R.T.O.?
Largely, yes. Download the ZIP from /zip/W2zAEe, extract it and run sh verify.sh (macOS) or verify.bat (Windows). File hashes are recomputed with nothing to install. Timestamps are checked with OpenSSL 3; the Ed25519 signature also needs the certo-bagit tool. If they are missing, the scripts try to download a verification kit and check its hash; otherwise those checks are reported as "SKIP", that is, not performed. The final "BUNDLE VALID" message is not enough on its own: read the individual check results. CERTO_NO_NETWORK=1 disables both the kit download and the online register query.
Why are there three timestamps?
Each one closes a different step. Sectigo timestamps the report.txt report (SHA-512) at 18:01:22 and the signed manifest.json at 18:01:25; InfoCert, as the last operation, timestamps tagmanifest-sha256.txt at 18:01:31, which covers the bundle through the chain of hashes. The InfoCert one is a qualified eIDAS timestamp. verify.sh checks the last two; the timestamp on the report is checked with the command given below.
What is the difference between code 6acd045d10b3e19dc213 and UUID 57afefa4-…?
The UUID 57afefa4-8708-4800-9386-710b96352603 is created on the operator's computer and identifies the acquisition inside the bundle. Code 6acd045d10b3e19dc213 and short code W2zAEe are assigned by the server when it receives the bundle: they are the ones in the online reports and the email.
Does the bundle prove the page content was true?
No. The bundle documents what the software collected during the session, distinguishing live captures from subsequent processing and recovery. Checking the hashes and timestamps allows the integrity of the files covered by the seal to be verified. It does not establish that the content was true, or that the website remained unchanged after the acquisition. Dates written on the page also remain the site's own statements.

The same bundle, for your evidence.
